Peanut Sauce for Satay


Satay is an Indonesian word for small pieces of meat – chicken, pork or beef – grilled on skewers and usually served with a spicy peanut sauce. Here is a tasty, simplified version of the sauce. Also try it as a dip with raw vegetables or with cold chicken.

2 Tbsp oil

1 clove garlic, crushed

1 onion, chopped

¼–½ tsp chilli powder

½ cup crunchy peanut butter

1 Tbsp soy sauce

1 Tbsp lemon juice

1 Tbsp brown sugar

¾ cup coconut cream



1. Put the oil, garlic, onion and chilli powder in a saucepan and place over a moderate heat. Cook gently until the onion is translucent, about 10 minutes.

2. Stir in the peanut butter, soy sauce, lemon juice and sugar, then add the coconut cream. Season with salt to taste.
